He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Hardin and Bertie Scalf Hardin; his wife Shirley Johnson Hardin; his son Ira "Deano" Hardin Jr.; his great grandchild James Edward Nichols; and his pet Tinker Bell Sissy Cat.
He is survived by: his daughters, Deanna Nichols (Arthur) of Elizabethton and Kimberly Waycaster (Travis Carnes) of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Johnathan Nichols (Michelle) of Limestone, Noah Nichols (Josalynn Shetley) of Elizabethton, Trevor Waycaster (Macy) of Roan Mountain and Shirley Waycaster of Elizabethton; his great grandchildren, Sage Nichols of Limestone and Lottie Waycaster of Roan Mountain; his nephew Ken Hardin of Elizabethton; his nieces, Sharon Edwards and Angie Holly; his friend Ray Fagan of Elizabethton; and his stepgranddaughter Kiersten Carnes of North Carolina. He is also survived by several other extended family and adopted family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Carter County animal shelter at 135 Sycamore Shoals Dr, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or to the Harmony Free Will Baptist Church youth group at 3405 Gap Creek Rd, Hampton, TN 37658.
