He was predeceased by: his parents, Earnest Carpenter and Nellie Mason Carpenter; his wife Linda A. Carpenter; his brothers, Gary Carpenter and Phil Carpenter (Melody Carpenter); and his brother-in-law Bill Bennett.

He is survived by: his sons, Jeff Carpenter (Regina) of Elizabethton and Chad Carpenter (Crystal) of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Garrett R. Carpenter, Colton W. Carpenter, Cierra Carpenter, Aubree Thomas, Braycen Thomas and Chasity Skeens (Ryan Thomas); his siblings, Sue Bennett of Tampa, FL, Virgil Carpenter (Linda) of Jonesborough, Mitchell Carpenter (Margaret) of Elizabethton, Jackie Carpenter (Connie) of Elizabethton and Joseph Carpenter (Tammy) of Elizabethton; his siblings-in-law, Spaller (Liz) of Erwin, TN and Helen Johnson of Elizabethton; his close friend Maxine English; his friend Roger Lowe; and his nieces and nephews, Billy, Greg, Stacy, Phillip, Patrick, Joseph, Bradley, Brandon, Wiley, Shane, Jason, Matthew, Kim, Stevie, Jill, Candice, Wendy, Dee-Dee, Joy, Amber, Dorah, Jessica, Rachel and Amanda.
