He was predeceased by: his wife Jimmie Lu Choat; his son Dan Gregory Choat; his parents, Frank Choat and Maggie Choat; and his siblings, Nelson Choat, Bill Choate, Ernest Choat, Robert Choate, Martha Lu Armstrong, Arbutus Mayfield, Oveline Massingale, Daphne Blair and Joyce Culpepper.

He is survived by: his sons, Perry (Karen Choat), Nick (Michelle Choat), Tracy (Gail Choat) and David (Cheri Choat); his grandchildren, Erin (Matt Bonds), Meghan (Gustavo Santos), Payton Choat, Colin Choat (Mary Kathryn), Drew Choat (Josie), Adam Choat (Val), Cameron Choat and Ian Shaw; his great grandchildren, Emmaleigh Choat, Aubrey Choat, Gracyn Choat, Sophia Bonds, Hannah Bonds, Elijah Bonds, Owen Bonds and Lucas Santos; his siblings, Pat Klein of Knoxville, TN and Gene Choate; and his close friend Linda Newberry of Etowah, TN..
