He is survived by: his wife Janice Owen Townsend; his daughters, Cynthia Townsend, Carol (Martin McCool) and Christi (Tim Davidson); and his grandchildren, Megan Whittier, Chelsea Harbaugh, Cailyn Davidson, Madeline Foster, Parker Davidson and Natalie Davidson. He is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren.
