He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Garfield and Ida Belle Ellis Hicks; his wife Shirley White Hicks; and his siblings, Pauline Elliott, Florence Jennings, Bonnie Stout, James Hicks, Albert Hicks and Harold Dean Hicks.
He is survived by: his daughters, Teresa Kramer (Bert) of Erwin and Lorie Smith (Mike) of Zionville; his grandchildren, Cherity Swift of Johnson City, Wes Holtsclaw of Elizabethton, Lynsi Nave (Tim) of Erwin and Sarah Moore (Ryan) of Elk Park; his great grandchildren, Ethan Bennett, Sophia Moore, Lily Gilbert, Rhett Moore and Jaxon Gilbert; and his caregiver Carolyn Dail. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
