He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Turney and Mary Hicks McGill; his former wives, Reathel McGill and Bonnie McGill; his wife Rose McGill; and his sons, Dennis McGill, Bobby McGill, Ricky Allen McGill, Roy McGill and David McGill.

He is survived by: his children, Judy Price, Jerry McGill, John McGill Jr., Terry McGill, James McGill Sr. and Jeff McGill. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
