He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Kerns and Evelyn Walker Kerns; his brother-in-law Lewis Barbee; his sister Vivian; his brother-in-law Bill Barbee; his brother John; his sister-in-law MaryAnn Kerns; his sister Jimmie Ruth; his brother-in-law Buddy Barbee; his sister Faynette Kerns; his sisters-in-law, Gail Kerns and Bonnie Burchard; and his father-in-law W. H. Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Sharon Smith Kerns; his siblings, Dorothy Kerns Barbee, Alan Kerns and Amos "Wade" Kerns; his mother-in-law Inez Smith; and his siblings-in-law, Marvin Smith (Dorothy), Rick Smith (Carolyn), Mike Smith (Donna), Pat Holdefer (Steve), Debbie Smith (Steve), Stanton Smith (Karen), Melinda Bice (Jim), Steve Burchard and Amy Walden (Mike). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended family.
