He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert T. Bates and Edith Hunley Bates; and his sisters, Louise Bates and Eva Schlosser. He is survived by: his wife Linda Wilson Bates; his children, Jason Bates (Amy), Kristy Turner (Phil) and Leslie King (Kevin); his grandchildren, Dalton, Kayleigh Turner, Elizabeth, Jack Bates, Katie and Karly King; and his brother Hugh Bates (Carolyn).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee.
