He was predeceased by : his son Duffy Tao McDowell; his parents, Marvin J McDowell and Kathryn Brown McDowell; his sister Peggy Shock; and his stepmother Millie McDowell.

He is survived by : his wife Sandra "Sam" McDowell; his children, Babette Watson (Jimmy) of Longview, TX, Jennifer Senn Ouzts (Curt) of Leesville, SC and J. Gabe Senn (Amanda) of Kingsport, TN; his siblings, Kathy Riley (A. C.) of Lufkin, TX, Marvin Dennis McDowell (Diane) of Lufkin, TX and Glen McDowell (Ann) of Bullard, TX; his grandsons, Brandon Bruch, Duffy McDowell Jr., Zachery McDowell, Ryan Ouzts, Tanner Ouzts, Parker Senn and Sawyer Senn; and his great grandchild Brooklyn Bruch.
