He is survived by: his wife Sheryldine Bates; his children, Quintel James, Jay Bates, Jr. and Latoshia Bates-Brightwell (Anthony); his siblings, Terence Bates, Carrie Gist, Ernestine Harris (Victor, Sr.), Imogene Nance and Helena McNabb; his grandchildren, Tyler Washington, KeAndre Bates, Taylor Brightwell, Tavis Brightwell, Jaycitee Bates and Jamari Bates; his great grandchildren, KeAnna Bates, KeAndre Bates, Jr. and Mazi Bates; his stepchildren, Tyrone Holland, II and Shanida Holland; his stepgrandchildren, Lyonesha Holland, Monik Holland, Iyina Holland, Neshae Holland, Tyrone Holland, III, Tychele Holland, Jayla Holland, Jyrien Holland, Zakai Holland, Kha'zir Holland and Adella Flemings; his cousins, Howard Achoe (Pat), Clarence Crippen (Rooster) and JoAnn Crawford (family: Bates, Downs, Chaney); and his friends, Hilton "Snake" Tate, Lynwood Smith and Joe Davis. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
