He was predeceased by : his parents, Henry "Shorty" Vantrease and Susie Ella Criswell Vantrease; and his brothers, Henry Peyton Vantrease and Sammy Jay Vantrease. He is survived by : his wife Joyce Bates Vantrease; his children, Valerie Joyce Griffin (Michael) and Nicholas John Vantrease (Christina); his grandson Conner Bruce; and his siblings-in-law, Barbara Vantrease, Dora Vantrease, Deanie Eastland (Jimmy), Sandra Youngs and Wayne Bates (Ann). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
