He was predeceased by : his parents, James Tate and Martha Waggoner Tate; his wife Joyce DeFoe Tate; his son Robert Louis "Bobby" Tate; and his brothers, Ray Tate and Frank Tate.

He is survived by : his daughter Sherry Shrum (Ken) of Murfreesboro; his sisters, Hilda Tankersley (Buddy) of Lewisburg and Sylvia Whitsett (Floyd) of Lewisburg; and his grandsons, John Tate of Lewisburg, Daniel of Murfreesboro and Samuel Shrum of Murfreesboro.

Visitation was held on Saturday, April 10th 2021 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Chapel of Cornersville Funeral Home (310 N Main St, Cornersville, TN 37047). A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 10th 2021 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Saturday, April 10th 2021 at 1:30 PM at the Beechwood Cemetery (Beechwood Cemetery, Cornersville, TN 37047).
