He is survived by: his children, Malachi Johnson and Rosa Thurston; the mother of his children Rebecca Johnson Thurston; his godparents, Brad and Tabitha Derryberry; his siblings, Tracy Szymanski, Silver Thurston, Tara Swan (Michael), Robert A. Thurston (Marlo), Jeremy Thurston, Thomas Thurston and Tyler Thurston; his aunt Nancy; his brothers, Jason Dyer and Adam Alexander; and his significant other Buddy. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be given to ERCU.

“Jessie and i shared a total of 17 years together while he was here with us. That was literally half of my life. We grew up with each other and knew the very best and the very worst inside of each other. He was an amazing father, husband, friend, son, brother, and hero! There is no way to depict the hole he left inside of my heart when he left me and the kids. Life stopped completely as we knew it and threw us completely upside down. We will never not grieve his death. We love him always”
