Clyde Layton Tanner Obituary

Clyde Layton Tanner, 76, of McMinnville, TN passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 5, 2026. Born on April 11, 1950 in the house his father built, Clyde was preceded in death by his mother, Gracie Tanner, his father, Chester “Jake” Tanner, and his brother Chester Tanner.

Clyde leaves a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Theodora “Teddi” Tanner. He is survived by his children, Paula Hoffman, Theresa (William) Johnson, Roberta King, Cherri (Grant) Van Aken, Crystal Clemons, and Caren (Jamie) Graham; grandchildren, Grace and Gretchen Van Aken, Samantha (Dan) Brown, Hailey (Trayton) King, and Andrew, Jonathan, and Aidan Graham; great-grandchildren, Josephine and William Brown; and far too many cousins to list.

Clyde was a way-finder. He could find a way to do just about anything. He spent many years driving a truck and building roads. He could drive anything, fix anything and build something from nothing. Even when his feet gave out, he didn’t. He simply turned his electric wheelchair into a mobile workshop and kept right on going.

He was a hero to many. While he has often been credited with many “he saved my life” stories, he is also responsible for many death-defying adventures. He was a vocal advocate of the legalization of marijuana. He enthusiastically shared everything he had. He played bass and guitar and loved music. He spent many hours playing his favorite game, Qwirkle. He enjoyed fishing, boating, riding scooters, and parties.

It is notable that he passed away next door to the place of his birth on the same property where his parents spent their final moments. His family would like to express their gratitude that he shared his birthplace with them and created a homeplace that shelters his family today.
