She was predeceased by: her husband Maury J. Wessels; her parents, Naomi Brashears Pratt and Bennie Brashears; her stepfather Homer L. Pratt; and her brother Keith Brashears.
She is survived by: her brother Gary M. Brashears; her sons, Maury Jr. (Lee), Michael (Jennifer), Mark (Lelia) and Mitchell (Stacy); her grandchildren, Laine Lightsey, Patricia Wessels, John Wessels and Taylor Wessels; her great grandchildren, Lydia Lightsey, Eleanor Joan and Theodore Henry Wessels; and her nieces, Beth Brashears Noe, Sarah Brashears Lawrenz and C. B. Brashears Caldwell.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Joan's legacy by supporting St. Jude Children's Hospital.
