He was predeceased by: his former wife Shirley Davis Thompson; his parents, Walter Thompson and Ambrosia Thompson; and his sisters, Linda Thompson and Joyce Thompson Ferguson.

He is survived by: his wife Reba Thompson; his children, Karen Patterson (Robert) of Batesville, Kevin Thompson of Memphis and Keith Thompson (Elaina) of Charlotte; his siblings, Barbara Smith, Dale Ingram, Jo Lynn Davis (Rhesa), J. W. Thompson of Huntsville and Woodie Thompson (Carol) of Summerville; his stepson Dustin Lough (Jeanne) of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Jake Patterson (Delisha), Shelby Patterson, Kasey Patterson, Brett Thompson and Kayla Rice (Grant); and his great grandchildren, Harper Rice and Renny Lacey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
