Joe Robinson wrote a sympathy message

“My condolences to the Hayward family. I too was one of then CPT Hayward former ROTC cadets at SC State (Class of 82). The things COL Hayward did for us to ensure that we would be successful in the US Army Is unmatched by any Officer I know. My prayers go out to the family and friends of COL Hayward. He was truly one of the best to wear the Army uniform. I owe my successful Army career to COL Hayward. Rest in Peace. Sincerely, COL Joe Robinson (USA Ret) Class of 82”

Reginald Thomas wrote a sympathy message

“To the family of the late Colonel Randy Heyward. When I received word today from Colonel Bill Reese my heart sadden. Colonel Heyward was a great Army ROTC and CAS3 Instructor to me and all of my fellow SCSC Bulldog classmates (1982). I personally didn’t the difference between a Major and a Sergeant Major, but Captain Heyward (then) was kind and caring but also tough as nails and pushed us because he wanted us to succeed in the U.S. Army as he did. Rest In Peace, Ranger! One of our very best!”
