He was predeceased by: his parents, Buford Vardell and Margery Vardell; and his son Donald Vardell Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Carol Moore Vardell; his son Robert S. Vardell; his stepchildren, Renee Flanick, Eileen Borski, Karen Burkhalter and Robby Porter; his sisters, Paulette Demko and Deborah Vardell; his grandchildren, Amanda, Joshua, Carson, Eva, Meredith, Todd, Vincent, Elizabeth, Evan, Drew and McCall; and his great grandchildren, Faye, Alexis, Reilly, Owen, Wilson, Bash, Jude, Park and Eli.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that any memorial contributions be made to any Veterans Charity of their Choice.
