He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Oates and Margaret Oates; and his stepson John Giddings. He is survived by: his wife Betty Jane Oates; his children, Donna M. Seal, Shirley J. Ward (Joe), James R. Grant and Robert D. Oates; his close friends, Carolyn Witt and Liz Griffin; and his caregivers, Jazmine, Crystal and Kasie. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
