He was predeceased by: his parents, Wanda Murphy Bates Barr and James Carlos Bates; and his stepfather William Barr of College Grove. He is survived by: his wife Karen Bates (Wilburn); his daughters, Lauren Bockoven (Nick) and Kayla Saroniero (Rob); his grandsons, Bates Ryan Bockoven and Rhett William Bockoven; and his sisters, Jamie Mrzena (Scott), Cris Stapp (Ken) and Robyn Barrett (Bill).
