He was predeceased by: his parents, James F. McCarty and Albulah Elliott McCarty; his wife Frances Neeley McCarty; his sister Jessie Hart; and his children, Judy Faye Pope, Roger McCarty and Ralph Carlton.

He is survived by: his sister Eunice Sudberry of Unionville, TN; his grandchildren, Ralph Carlton II (Jamie), Angela Brown and Charles Pope; and his great grandchildren, Lane and Lucas Carlton.
