He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph Mahoney and Robin Mahoney; and his brother Don Mahoney. He is survived by: his wife Glenda Mahoney; his sons, Kirk Gates (Holly Gates) and Bryan Mahoney (Meaghan Mahoney); his siblings, Glenn Mahoney (Pam Mahoney) and Ken Mahoney (Sheila Mahoney); and his grandchildren, Mackinley Gates, Nolan Gates, Harper Mahoney and Colin Mahoney.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Heart Association in Gary's honor.
