She was predeceased by: her parents, L. T. Alexander and Klara Alexander; and her daughter Kristen Lee Smithson. She is survived by: her husband James E. Smithson; her children, Kandacy Smithson-Groves and Christopher Pryor Smithson; her grandchildren, Brody James Smithson, Jessica Groves and Colin Groves; and her siblings, Warneta Conner (Jim) and Robert Alexander (Merrie). She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
