He was predeceased by: his wife Sarah Mathis; his grandson Carl Peter Mathis; his mother Zelma; his stepfather Russell McMahan; his siblings, Jack Mathis, Sam Clayton McMahan (Martha), Chester McMahan, Lester McMahan (Geraldine), Bashie McMahan, Lessie Winter and Pauline Tolley; and his daughters-in-law, Beverly Mathis and Sherrie Mathis.
He is survived by: his sons, Ralph Mathis, Terry Mathis and Jerry Mathis (Beverly); his siblings, Geneva Strom, Roy McMahan and Creed McMahan (Glenda); and his siblings-in-law, Sue McMahan, Nell Mathis and Billy Winter. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a great great grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
