He was predeceased by: his son Richard Olaf, Jr.; and his parents, John Barton and Phyllis Sabine. He is survived by: his wife Dona Lynne (Shields); his daughters, Rachel Elizabeth Dunn (Nathan) and Lucy Melynne (Kaleb Sobek); his siblings, Bart (Beth), Chris (Laura) and Karen Majors; and his grandchildren, Nate and Bella Grace Dunn. He is also survived by several cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family.
