He was predeceased by : his wife Carmen Montes Cumming; his parents, Wallace Chester Cumming and Virginia Page Cumming; and his brothers, Bill Cumming, Dave Cumming and Don Cumming.

He is survived by : his children, Nela Cumming (Brian Lacewell), Robert B. Cumming, Jr. and William C. Cumming (Rosie); and his grandchildren, Jacob Lacewell, Kahlel, Zachary and Lili Cumming. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

In 2023, he was inducted into the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame for outstanding contribution to East Tennessee Culture & Literacy.
