He was predeceased by: his parents, James Russell and Jeana Sue Russell; his son John Coats; and his sister Sharon Coats. He is survived by: his wife Kay Coats; his granddaughter Madison Coats of Corinth, MS; and his uncle George Fletcher (Donna) of Nashville. He is also survived by several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Kidney Foundation.
