He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Sue Thurmer Smith and Lloyd Everett Smith Sr.; and his brother Lloyd Everett Smith Jr. (Priscilla Smith). He is survived by: his siblings, Robert Thurmer Smith (Lynda Smith) and Sarah Sue Smith Wilson (L. C. Wilson); his spouse Boydie Lynn Thompson Smith; his son Matthew Aaron Smith (Angela Mikeal Smith); and his grandchildren, Riley Aaron Smith, Ethan Mikeal Yonce, Caden Lane Smith, Adam Blake Yonce, Addison Elizabeth Smith and Frances Begley Morris.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Thom's name to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
