He was predeceased by: his parents, John W. Johnson and Ruby L Johnson; his wife Juanita Shell Johnson; and his siblings, Linda Schmitz, Wanda Carol Johnson, Roger Dale Johnson and Johnny Johnson.

He is survived by: his children, Tabitha Merrell (Bill) of Puryear and Jason Shell Johnson of Puryear; his sisters, Patty Thompson and Deborah Ridgeway of Paris; and his grandsons, David Moros and Liam Merrell of Puryear, Tennessee.. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren.
