He was predeceased by : his father Charlie Benton Gunnels; his wife Bobbie Jean Gunnels; and his mother Johnnie Ora Raines Gunnels. He is survived by : his children, Joe Gunnels and Denise Turner; his grandchildren, Leah Gunnels and Lucas Gunnels; and his siblings, Verta Franklin, Bud Gunnels and Gary Gunnels.
