He was predeceased by: his son Howard Matt Henderson; his parents, Dr. W. T. Henderson and Florence Jarratt Henderson of Salem; his siblings, William Henderson, Harold Henderson, Florence Henderson Smith, Evelyn Henderson, Albert Henderson and Matt Whitaker Henderson Sr.; and his niece Elaine Henderson Davenport.
He is survived by: his children, Joann Henderson Tarpley (Steve) and John J. Henderson II (Johnny) of Rockvale, Tennessee.; his sibling's children, William T. Henderson III, Dr. Rita Henderson Slayden, Matt Whittaker Henderson Jr., Jeannie Henderson Hoover, Albert Henderson (Newton) and Shri-Lahn Sanford Glasner; and his cousin Andrew Jarratt.
