He was predeceased by: his parents, William Frank Bates and Leona Allison Bates; and his brother William Max Bates. He is survived by: his wife Virginia Dale McKinney Bates; his children, Edwin Garland Bates, Jr. of Shelbyville, William Wesley Bates of Hartsville, Marty Sean Bates (Charlene) of Shelbyville, Bonnie Dawn Williams of Shelbyville, Cherry Sunshine Mitchum (Ronny) of Crossville and Jennifer Rebecca Clayton (Davey) of Hendersonville; his grandchildren, Charles, Justin, Summer "Rosebud", Levi, Abby, Anna, Shelbee, Will, Chloe and Liz; and his great grandchildren, Lilly "Lilly Bug" and Sean Alex.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home (739 N Main St, Shelbyville, TN 37160). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 19th 2025 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
