He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret; his parents, A. D. Wellbaum and Clara Wellbaum; and his brother Conrad Wellbaum. He is survived by: his children, Beth Merz (Mark) and Johnny Wellbaum (Missy); his grandchildren, Matthew Wellbaum, Anna Merz (Nathan McConnell), Kevin Wellbaum and Evan Merz; his great grandchild Lottie McConnell; and his siblings, Catherine Smith, Barbara Hoskins and Alan Wellbaum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to First Baptist Church of Soddy Daisy, where John and Margaret were longtime members, or to The Tunnels to Towers Foundation, which supports veterans and first responders, would be much appreciated.
