He was predeceased by: his parents, Dottie Kesterson and Joe Carpenter, Sr.; his stepfather Edward "Ed" Kesterson; and his brother Brad Carpenter. He is survived by: his wife Heather Carpenter; his son Matthew Carpenter; his sister Kim Marler; his stepsiblings, Cletis Kesterson (Tammy) and Vickie Rines (Buster); and his brother-in-law Michael Soderburg (Shelia). He is also survived by nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
