He was predeceased by: his parents, T. J. Key Jr. and Zella Grace McMinn Key. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Frances Rister; his children, Monty Key (Elizabeth Key) and Sherry Key McAdams (Robert McAdams); his grandchildren, Kendall Key Brinkman (Ryan), Connor Key, Sarah McAdams, Luke McAdams and Mary McAdams; his brother Billy Mac Key; his niece Shanna Key Mims; and his nephew Brad Key.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hendrick Home for Children in Abilene.
