He was predeceased by: his father Joe Whitson; his wife Leona Whitson; his mother Vesta Manning Whitson; his granddaughter Abigail Young; and his brother Frank Whitson.

He is survived by: his daughters, Debra Brooks (Lane) of Alice and Karen Young (Steve) of Houston; and his grandchildren, Keely Senft (Shane) of Helotes and Dalton Brooks (Emily Reierson) of San Antonio. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
