He was predeceased by: his parents, Hazel Elizabeth Smith (Palmer) and Weldon Raymond Smith; his brother Arthur "Art" Lewis Smith; his sister-in-law Esther Smith; his mother-in-law Augustina Chavarria; his brother-in-law Jose "Freak" Chavarria; his niece Shelly D. Pearce; and his grandsons, Lil Daniel Celaya and Gavin Hearon.
He is survived by: his wife Sue Smith; his children, Daniel Celaya (Livia Grace), Michael D. Smith, Andon D. Smith, Adel Sarabia (Martin Sarabia), Carolyne Bennett (Mark Bennett), Jacklyn Dubose and Tina Rodriguez; his son-in-law Paul D. Pearce; and his brother Samuel "Sam" D. Smith (Charlotte). He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, 4 nephews, 2 nieces and several great nephews and nieces.
Visitation was held on Friday, September 11th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel (209 W Sul Ross Ave, Alpine, TX 79830). A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 12th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Alpine Church of Christ (402 E Sul Ross Ave, Alpine, TX 79830). A burial was held on Saturday, September 12th 2026 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at the Elm Grove Cemetery.
