He was predeceased by: his mother Jo Mae Merrell (Smith); and his sister Jo Beth Gardner. He is survived by: his wife Karen Merrell of Amarillo; his brother Warren Lee Merrell of Quitaque; his children, David Merrell of Stratford, Jennifer Middleton (Charlie) of Lubbock and Spencer Johnson (Hanna) of Idalou; his stepdaughters, Ashlea Hedrick of Oxnard and Haylea Collins of Amarillo; and his grandchildren, Jessica, Macoy, Miller, Morgan Mae, Lucky, Ace, Ava, Reece and Tate.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Jackson Taylor Memorial fund.
