He was predeceased by: his father Bill Bass; his wife Anice Coats; his brother Wink Coats; and his grandson Jeremy. He is survived by: his sons, Jay Coats (Lorrie) of Lockney and James Coats (Dianne) of Portales; his close friend Cindy Rea; his sister-in-law Debbie Coats of Shallowater; and his grandchildren, Jaycee, Randy, Shelby, Jodyee of Dixie, Kourtnie and Jordyn. He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.
