He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl D. Buchanan and Margaret L. Buchanan (Jacobs); his sister Karen L. Buchanan; and his brother-in-law Bill Ritchie. He is survived by: his wife Donna Buchanan of Arlington, Texas; his son Michael; his daughter-in-law Cecelia Buchanan of Kennedale; his grandchildren, Sarah Buchanan of Arlington, Texas, Rebecca (Joey Jimenez) of Burleson, Jonathon Buchanan of Goltry and Connor Buchanan of Kennedale, Texas; and his siblings-in-law, Doreen Ritchie of Granbury, Diana (Jim Cook) of Apison, David Esselburn of Coshocton and Doug (Rachel Esselburn) of Albany, Ohio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Boy Scouts of America or St. Jude's Childrens Hospitals in David's name.
