It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Maria Chavez of Athens, Texas, who passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 96, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Jose Cataño and Juana Chavez; her husband Jose Reynoldo Bonilla Robles; her sons, Audomaro Bonilla Cataño, Alonso Bonilla Cataño and Eliazar Bonilla Falle; her grandson Christopher Bonilla; and her siblings, Alejandra Cataño, Pedro Cataño, Felipa Cataño, Gregoria Cataño and Feliz Cataño.
She is survived by: her children, Viven Avelina Rodriguez, Abelardo Bonilla Cataño, Alejandrina Bonilla, Artemia Bonilla Cataño, Alvaro Bonilla Cataño and Lourdes Bonilla Cataño; her siblings, Manuel Cataño Chavez and Juana Cataño; and her grandchildren, Enrique Rodriguez, Manuel Miranda, Maria of Jesus Miranda, Antonio Miranda, Nicolas Miranda, Juan Miranda, Martha Bonilla, Raymundo Silva, Victor Hugo Silva, Selene Silva, Rosa Avila, Jorge Avila, Francisco Avila, Reynoldo Avila, Gabriela Avila, Omar Alejandro Bonilla, Jonathan Bonilla, Ulices Bonilla, Cesar Alonso Bonilla, Charly Bonilla, Roberto Bonilla, Jessica Bonilla, Marisol Bonilla, Leslie Bonilla, Carlos Bonilla, Abelando Bonilla, Elizabeth Bonilla and Christian Bonilla. She is also survived by 66 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 25th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home (842 NE Loop 7, Athens, TX 75752). A rosary will be held on Monday, May 25th 2026 at 7:00 PM at the same location. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 26th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the St. Edward's Catholic Church (800 E Tyler St, Athens, TX 75751).
