He was predeceased by: his parents, Emil Miertschin and Ella Miertschin (Jurk); his son Todd Alan Miertschin; his brother Louis Miertschin; and his siblings-in-law, Alice Miertschin and Fred Becker.

He is survived by: his wife Frances Miertschin (Kappler); his children, Timothy John Miertschin (Diane) and Thomas Layne Miertschin (Deanna); his grandson Christopher James Miertschin; his children, Katie Renae Atnip (Jason), McKayla Miertschin and Ethan Miertschin; his great grandchildren, Landon Atnip, Sadie Atnip and Halle Atnip; and his sister Mary Ann Becker. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or to the Austin Food Bank in Elmo's memory.
