He was predeceased by: his parents, Bertha Elizabeth Sadler and James H. Means; and his siblings, Joan Khabele and Ronald Means. He is survived by: his sisters, Janet Scott (Samuel) and Patricia King (Marvin); and his sister-in-law Diane. He is also survived by his wife and two children.
In 2023, James was inducted into Texas Athletics Hall of Honor for his contribution to history and Texas sports.
