He was predeceased by: his father Junies Smith; and his grandmother Alvedia Trahan. He is survived by: his mother Betty Smith; his wife Brenda Smith; his children, LaTashja West (Derrick), De'Anna Smith, Kimberly Smith, Derek Smith, Sr. (Devin) and Michael Smith, Jr.; his brothers, David Smith (Carolyn) and Robert Smith (Debra); his grandchildren, Dillon, Jasmine, Jared, Kaylon, John, Michael C., Brian, Hailey, Michael F., Paris, Tiauna, Derek Jr. and Braylon; his aunts, Bobbi Holmes, Marva Jones and Betty Lois Jones; and his uncle Floyd Jones (Shirley). He is also survived by other loving relatives and friends.
