Paul Neil Reed Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Paul Neil Reed (Beaumont, Texas), who passed away on October 18, 2023, at the age of 93, leaving family and friends to mourn his loss. Neil Reed was a beloved husband, father, athlete, veteran, coach, and teacher.

Neil is survived by his wife, Judy, four adult children, 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His energy, integrity, and kindness influenced at least 4 generations of students and athletes over his long career as a teacher and a coach. The positive impact he has had on those he touched cannot be overstated, and his attention to the Indvidual was the same, whether it was a future Heisman Trophy winner, a championship-winning NBA player and coach, or an underprivileged student athlete who just needed someone to believe in them.

He was magic plain and simple, and leaves behind a legacy of human excellence in those who knew him. His dimpled Irish smile, even a few weeks before his death, could light up a room.

The family plans to hold a private memorial service at a later date. If you would like, please leave a sympathy message to the family on his memorial page.

“To Judy, Maureen, Carla, Yvette, and Robbie, I express condolence, of course, but more so joy in reflection of having known such a great family and especially coach Reed. My father, his dear friend Don, passed in 2020 yet with fond memories of their association. He would have wanted me to recognize Neil in gratitude for their friendship and mutual successes in their early careers. I too learned a great deal listening quietly as they discussed people, winning, and all about basketball.”

“I met Coach Reed in the Rio Grande Valley. Jim Sturgeon introduced me to him. Coach Reed and I coached together at Weslaco High School in Weslaco, Texas. Respectfully I believed he was a walking encyclopedia. I learned so much about the game of basketball from him. I used plays in my basketball career that I learned from Coach Reed. I had the utmost respect for him and I loved him. We lost touch as the years went by. My sincere condolences to his entire family he will be dearly missed. RIP”

“Thank you, Judy and family, for sharing Coach Reed with us. Few people possess the intellect, character, passion, and selfless drive to coach players like Coach Reed. He profoundly impacted many lives, far exceeding the typical athlete/coach framework. He was a rare, special person, and it was a privilege to feel his unwavering love and pride as part of his extended family of players, both on and off the court throughout the years.”
