He was predeceased by: his parents, Loucille Matthews and Herbert Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth; his son Johnny Jr. (Kelly); his grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Matthews and Johnny Wayne "Trey" Matthews III; his son Scott Matthews (Beth Gates Matthews); his sister Shirley Spuriell; and his siblings-in-law, Patricia Fallows, Naomi Holler, Cheryl Karras and Jim Karras. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Saturday, October 3rd 2026 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Ebensberger Fisher Funeral Home (1265 N Main St, Boerne, TX 78006). A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 3rd 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a favorite charity or research organization.

Although I have not known them long, they have made a profound difference in my life. Sometimes people just touch you by the grace of God.
