He was predeceased by : his parents, Amos Thompson and Lou Berta Thompson; and his siblings, Frank Thompson, Willie Thompson, Ruby Bryant, Nancy Evans, Brown of Tennessee, Mary Evans and Naomi Thompson.

He is survived by : his son Johnnie Thompson Jr. (Latasha); his sisters, Donna Ellis and Zelma Perry; his grandchildren, Jamyra Smith, Jalen Smith and Ja'Keem Smith; and his close friend R. L. Smith. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
