He was predeceased by: his mother Nina Thomas Shell; and his brother-in-law L. G. Caskey. He is survived by: his father B. G. Shell; his wife Jane Parker Shell; his children, Jennifer Coe (Bobby), Carson and Dr. Jeff Shell (Michou); his grandchildren, Sloane and Sutton; and his sister Gloria Jean Caskey. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
