He was predeceased by: his parents, Otis Gilchriest, Jr. and Ida Marie Gilchriest (Bryant); his siblings, Doylin Gilchriest, Diane Gray, Sherry Carrell, Linda Barbre, Gayle Curtis and Monica "Penny" Petty; and his son-in-law Dennis Shutlz.

He is survived by: his wife Ernestine Gilchriest; his children, Chris Gilchriest (Karen), Scottie Gilchriest (Veronica), Greg Gilchriest of Buna, Pamela Sterling of Buna, Jana Davidson (Gerald), Jamie Smith (Margie) and Ynette Shultz of Colorado; and his brothers, David Gilchriest of Jasper, Keith Gilchriest of Buna and Dale Wayne Gilchriest of Kirbyville. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren.
