He was predeceased by: his wife Lynda Kay Hathaway; his parents, Shelton Hathaway and Pauline Bruno; his sister Dana Mathey; and his grandson Joshua Hathaway.

He is survived by: his son John Frederic Hathaway Jr. of Cleburne; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Hathaway, Emily Hathaway and John G. Hathaway; his sons, Joseph Michael Hathaway of Fort Worth and Frank Morphis (Connie Morphis); his granddaughter Abigail Morphis; his daughter Denyse Morphis Medlenka (Chris Medlenka); and his grandchildren, Sofia Medlenka, Avery Medlenka and Jacob Medlenka.

Memorials in John's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
